What is Trace Route?

Routing is to check the path from a site to another site in the Internet.

From the Wikipedia:

traceroute is a TCP/IP utility that allows the user to determine the route packets take to reach a particular host. traceroute works by increasing the "time to live" value of each successive packet sent. The first packet has a time to live (TTL) value of one, the second two, and so on....

This tool has included the function of ping and whois. Ping is a test to check whether a site is reachable and in proper state. Whois is to check the domain name from IP address or vice versa.

If we have a website for marketing in the Internet, we have to follow the statistics of visitors. Best way is to have good analyst that gives up the idea about the information including countries, webpages visited etc. Then we can check what have to do to improve.

Occasionally, we may need to check a certain site to know where it comes from or a competitor's country. So it depends individual need whether to buy a program or use free services to check.

We can buy a program to run in our computer from visualroute.com

Or we can go to traceroute and select the starting locations for free search.

The front page of traceroute has listed a lot of sites offering such services. Some are not opened to all.
