How many years will be the best for Domain Name registration? There are many choices. Some may prefer to register one year. Some may prefer to register for a number of years. Some may even register for 100 years. Basically, this is an individual choice basing on different situation. However, there is a question recently about whether short-term registration would affect the listing in Google. Check "Does the Length of Your Domain Registration Affect Your Search Engine Rankings" It may be true that search engines have to consider because there are many domain names that will exist for a short period only. As we all had experience that many links from search engines were failed. Of course, there might be other reasons including website maintenance, Internet traffic etc. But if there will be too many bad links, the search engine will suffer as we may try other one for searching. Therefore, it may be true that search engines have to solve this problem. As for the worry about someone getting your domain name when expired, this should not be happened with a good registrar. The registrar should remind domain name holder to renew the registration a few months before. We have stated that we have registered all our domain names with Network Solution and we had asked Network Solution about the booking of existing domain name. Their reply was even someone had booked the domain name, it would be the existing domain name holder who had the priority to extend the registration and only if the holder failed to extend, then the domain name would be offered to the booking list. Unfortunately, we may forget to act in time. It has happened that a famous news website in USA had forgotten to extend the domain name registration and their site was missing in the Internet for a few days. This is really a serious operation mistake. With the computerization today, there is not excuse for missing the expiry of such important registration. We always say that the fee for domain name registration is very low in compare with any cost to maintain the website. Unless the online project is about selling medicine or porno or scam, it will not be wise to register for just a year. According to a report, there about 2 millions domain name registration with false data. Check GAO finds 2.3M domain names registered with false data. Does it mean that over 2 millions online project are related to scam etc. that the owners need to hide their identities? No wonder that some clever netizen would search the domain name registration for confirming whether a website can be trusted or not. |
