The risk of simple password Oct. 22, 2005 It has happened a few days ago that our site was intruded. Fortunately, we check our site everyday and took immediate action to amend the problem. The case is that we could not log in to our site with the original password. Then we requested the hosting provider to forward the password to our registered email address. It was not the original password and someone might have changed it. When we built our site, we have chosen a meaningful password at that peaceful time. Although we know that the situation is different, yet we are lazy to change the password. The reason is that it was meaningless to intrude our site because we are not famous and any problem can be fixed one way or the other. We believe that this is a joke or the guy just want to show his/her ability to guess the password only. There is no problem for visitors since nothing has been done to our web pages. Some may say that we are lucky this time. Yes, we admit that there is a danger if the guy really wanted to do something harmful. At least, our site would be out of order for a few days before we could fix it. After we regain the control of the site, the first thing is to change for a stronger password. Will it be safe now? No, we do not believe so. It is always a chance for some smart guy who had nothing to do other than harming someone else for fun. The best way for a site is to check daily and have the recovery plan ready at hand. |
